Madera -- Joe Sullivan

Rode E5s, only 15 in the group. As you can imagine, everyone pretty much stuck together in the crit. I was able to break away to snag some prem points, but with two laps to go I flatted out. Unbeknownst to me, there was no free lap rule under 5 laps...this really screwed me in th GC. So, I went into the TT about 4 min. behind the leader, but ended up doing well and finishing 4th in the stage. Not bad, considering I was 1 of 2 riders who didn't have a TT bike. However, I didn't make up any time overall. Road race was line pacing...the entire 50 miles! One by one, we popped off people, and ended up with 6 of us. The only exciting thing that happened was one guy that attacked in the loopdy-loops; the rest of us worked together and reeled him in in no time. Well, the mishaps continued for me: with 6 mi. to go my front brakes clamped down on my wheel. This is the second damn time this has happened to me in a race (happened at UNR crit too). Not much you can do except stop and open the brakes up. I have no explanation for how this happens! Has this happened to anyone else? I think I ended up finishing about 6th or 7th overall...I haven't seen the final results. Other than the bike malfunctions and blistering heat, I had a great time. It was good meeting some of the wheelmen and doing my first stage race!
